IRIX Runs Multi-User Across Two Origin 200 Chassis

A Fresh Network Install onto a Blank Disk Reboots to a Four-Processor, Two-Module Root Login

THE MACHINE ROOM (September 14, 2026). The Origami project today announced that IRIX 6.5.30 installs and boots to a multi-user root login across two emulated SGI Origin 200 chassis, four R10000-class processors on two cache-coherent modules, from a fresh network installation with nobody at the console.

The machine is two Origin 200 nodes joined into one cache-coherent system: four 180 MHz R10000-class processors and 128 MB of memory across two modules, with each node’s base I/O chip carrying the serial console, the Ethernet and the SCSI. Where the single-chassis Origin 200 the project already runs IRIX on is one node, this is the two-chassis machine the Origin 200 line was built to scale into, with the second node’s memory and processors coherent with the first.

Installed From the Network, End to End

The install ran with nobody at the keyboard. Over the network, onto a blank disk, the vendor installer labelled the disk, fetched its miniroot, made its filesystems and copied its packages, and the machine rebooted from that disk to run level 2 and a root console login. The installed system’s inventory matches the machine it runs on: four IP27 processors, 128 MB of memory, both modules present in the hardware graph, and no error reported on any of its consoles.

About This Project

Origami is a permanent fork of QEMU that emulates SGI’s MIPS/IRIX ccNUMA machines. It exists because nothing else emulated them, and because SGI’s firmware and IRIX are the strongest available witness that the model is faithful. It ships nothing and sells nothing. It is a research and preservation project, unaffiliated with Silicon Graphics.

SGI, IRIX, Origin, MIPS and R10000 are trademarks of their respective owners, and this project is unaffiliated with any of them. No SGI code is reproduced in the fork.
